A working kitchen built around a single arched steel door — rift oak cabinetry, a quiet stone island, and a layout that finally fits the way this family cooks.
The Vision
Open the kitchen to the rest of the house without losing the quiet — a working room first, beautiful as a consequence.
The Challenge
The original kitchen was closed off by a load-bearing wall with a small pass-through. Opening it had to happen without changing the footprint of the house or the upstairs plan above.
The project
The original kitchen was closed off from the main living space with a small pass-through window. We opened the wall, framed it with a custom steel-and-glass arch, and let light travel the full depth of the house for the first time.
Cabinetry is rift-sawn white oak with hand-pulled brass; the island is a single slab of pale limestone honed soft. The result reads quiet from across the room and rewards a close look.
