Seasonal Decorating for a Hill Country Home: From Fall to Winter

In the Texas Hill Country, the seasons don't flip like a switch. October can still feel like summer, and December can bring a warm afternoon on the porch. That's why I like to decorate a Hill Country home in layers — one natural palette that moves from fall into the holidays without starting over.
Start with a palette your home already has
Limestone, warm wood, iron, and linen show up in so many homes from Boerne to Fredericksburg. I build seasonal color around those materials: rust, olive, cream, and soft brown for fall, then deeper greens, gold, and touches of red or plaid for the holidays. When the base stays the same, each change feels easy and intentional.
Fall: texture first
- Heirloom pumpkins in mixed sizes and soft colors
- Dried grasses, wheat, and silk fall stems in tall vessels
- Wool and linen throws on sofas and porch chairs
- Candles in amber glass or simple brass holders
The switch to the holidays
Around Thanksgiving, I keep the throws, candles, and natural wood pieces, and swap the pumpkins for greenery. Garland on the mantel, ribbon on the stair rail, and ornaments in the same warm palette tie everything together. Nothing has to come down and go back up — the home simply gets fuller and cozier.
Don't forget the porch
So much Hill Country living happens outside. A pair of planters, a wreath, and lanterns at the front door carry the season from the street into the house, and they welcome guests long before they reach the living room.
